2 October 2007 Passiflora caerulea

http://www.durgan.org/ShortURL/?MHNCL 2 October 2007 Passion Flower. (Passiflora caerulea) Name corrected 27 October 2007

This plant was grown from seed, started indoors in December 2006, and put outdoors in May 2007. It has flowered all summer, and there are always flowers present. The flowers last about two days. The fruit doesn't always form from every flower. The fruit has seeds and is rather pleasant to eat whole. If the seeds are removed before eating the outer thick flesh is insipid. This year I am going to leave it in situ to determine if it will over-winter. I am not too optimistic. It didn't over-winter.

My poetry club in Ottawa go by the name of Passionate Poets. We are preparing an anthology. One of the members suggested to use the image of passion flowers. I am in the process of designing the cover. Your clos-ups help me a great deal. I will try to also grow passion flowers from seeds next year. Live in Brantford now.

From what I have read, growing passiflora from seed can be problematic. Mine was accidental. Somebody sent me some Lotus seed and I planted it. Obviously the passion flower seed was mixed with the Lotus seed. The lotus seed didn't germinate, and lo and behold I ended up with the passion flower. Purchasing a plant in a pot from a supplier is certainly a reliable method of propagating. They can be over-winterd indoors with little difficulty.

Lotus as in Nelumbo?

As for the Passiflora, it's not incarnata, more likely caerulea.

My mistake. You are correct. The Passiflora is Passiflora caerulea. Here is more information.
