http://oyeiy.notlong.com/ 12 July 2007 Pictures indicating Stem growth. The darker, larger stems are last year's stems. These larger stems will bear next years fruit, as will some of the new stems. Some of the new stems will be pruned out. I have removes the supporting stakes to allow the bush to open up, but will re-stake for over-wintering.
http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/currants.html URL to a description of the plant and pruning methods.
6 July 2007 The first picture is the bush planted in May 2005. The Blackcurrent bush grows vigoursly. The remainder of the pictures indicate fruit production after one years growth. Some berries were blended with other fruits for a juice, and some will be eaten as a fruit desert. They are just another fruit for the home gardener, easy to grow.

Hi Durgan,
a question, I have several blackcurrant bushes, all of them grow from one stem. They are 3 or 4 years old. How did you manage to make your blackcurrant so bushy?
The plant puts out new stems yearly from the roots. Fruit is obtained NEXT YEAR on growth from the new stems, and also on new shoots that grow from the old stems. This is from memory, so don't quote it without checking other sources.
I staked the new stems last year about five strong stems. This fall I will keep about ten stems, probably some old ones and also some of the new stems. I haven't looked at the plant yet to determine what to do, since it is done after growth has ceased for the season.
If I read your message corectly you do not have any new root stems. This I find strange, unless they have been cut off.
From reading various internet sites about currant bushes, one can pretty well prune it to any shape desired. I want a big bushy plant under control and open. The stems are a bit fragile so I stake them carefully, hopefully they will becomed stong enough to sustain themselves.
I am no expert on this bush, since I have only had it for a two year growth period. I will add more when pruning time arrives.
I just took a quick look at the two year old bush, and there are the original five stems about the size if a man's index finger, and about ten this year's stems from the root about the size of a pencil.
I will take pictures tomorrow and post.
Durgan.

I have added pictures of the current bush and a URL explaining description and pruning on the original post. It is most informative.
Durgan.
