12 July 2007 Sunflower (Helianthus annus)

http://jomee.notlong.com

A few pictures of several of five sunflower plants. There is an attempt to grow one very tall. One is Titan about nine feet tall. It is in a good location and I water it carefully trying for maximium height, but it is in flower now and probably won't get much taller. Interesrting experiment anyway. All are very heaalthy with little bug damage, except for some holes in some leaves.

All of my sunflowers are volunteers. It appears that I have three varieties, two for sure : one tall, one small & multi-headed. I grow them only for the birds & squirrels. The birds & squirrels in turn, plant their own seeds. So really I guess it's not me growing them. Many of the seeds are from last year's crop, some purchased to supplement what I grew. I spend a good part of every spring & early summer thinning the unwanted sunflowers. It gets a bit out of control ! My tallest so far must be nearing yours, but having spent so much energy growing vertically, it looks like the flower will only be 3 or 4" across.

One year a sunflower plant grew about 12 feet tall and had a very large head, so I surmized that height doesn't necessarly have a correlation with the seed head size. Admittably the sample was small, but it is an indicator subject to more testing.

Your profile doesn't give your location. It is always great to see where people are from. Winnipeg?
