Various yard work was completed today preparing the garden area for the Winter sleep. The ground cherry vines were pull, and shredded, time one hour. A load of wood chips were picked up at a city park and stored for Spring use, time two hours. The last of the tomato vines were pulled and shredded, time one hour.

Hi Durgan---was wondering if you had any problems with squirrels in your area, eating tulip bulbs. I've been trying to find a solution, here in Northern Virginia. My latest idea is to lay firewood on top of the freshly dug areas, and wait for the first frost. No clue if it will work!

There are squirrels in my garden periodically, but my little dog always chases them, so they don't stay for long periods. I have never seen them digging tulip bulbs.

Many people feed the squirrels, so maybe I am just lucky.

My solution would be to lay a heavy board on top of the bulbs, until just before freeze-up. Even a sheet of old plywood would suffice. I have never tried this, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work at first look.
